Tatum Student Lounge - California Institute of the Arts

Valencia, CA

This student lounge, an new interior in an existing building, aims to maximize programmatic interaction and flexibility while enhancing functionality and critical pragmatic concerns such as circulation.  The elements of the program – a lounge, café, and bookstore – are layered and intertwined laterally across the space to connect the interior space with the terrace and sidewalks outside.  In this way, the project weaves together the specific interior programs and connects those programs with the campus as a whole.  The blurring of the program allows the space to reflect the energy of the many students that utilize it each day, with the light boxes becoming a beacon to illuminate a late night entry from adjacent dorms.
