An initial interest in the geometry of the existing gymnasium structure lead to an investigation of the transitional portion of the roof where the cylindrical vault of the trusses meets the rectilinear perimeter wall.  This conoidal form, which exists in many Los Angeles buildings, consists of a series of swept straight lines that together form a continuous warped surface.  This surface was then used as the inspiration for the rest of the addition and renovation, which wraps around the street-side façade of the existing building and then flows through the rest of the site.  The mathematically precise yet formally expressive nature of the addition reflects the role of the club as a place where children receive both productive direction and the freedom of inspiration.
