This renovation and addition to an existing ranch-style home sought to reestablish a more intimate relationship between the house and its back yard, which includes two soaring Redwood trees that are each more than one hundred feet tall.  The addition immerses the new living spaces in tranquil views of the back yard garden and creates a new exhibition wall for the client’s art collection that enjoys a bounty of indirect natural light.  A grand staircase lends a sense of theatricality to the space and provides an opportunity to highlight pieces of the client’s collection of sculpture.  Capping the addition is a new master bedroom with a fireplace, master bathroom, and walk-in closet that projects out into the backyard and hovers there, suspended among the Redwoods.
