This home addition was subject to the challenges of a tight budget and an even tighter site where the only solution was to build vertically.  A series of conceptual design possibilities were developed and refined in order to arrive at an arrangement that provided the most attractive and efficient architectural solution.  A new artist’s studio is squeezed between the driveway and the existing house, with attention paid to ensure that suitable natural lighting is available in the studio space.  Above, the new master bedroom appears to float in space, contrasting its box-like mass with the graceful sensation of weightlessness.
