Guatemala City, Guatemala
Casa Saenz is anchored in the site by a sunken courtyard and wrapped with a curvilinear pathway that climbs the site. The path begins at a creek at the lower end of the sloped site and navigates the topography to end in a balcony above the trees, aiming to the sky. Engaged at different levels both within and outside the house, a hybrid dialogue emerges between the pathway, a kind of continuous architectural promenade, and the basic shell of the house. This dialogue creates a series of spatial tensions between elemental conditions that subtly engages earth, structure, and sky. Meanwhile, the main volume of the residence is manipulated to enhance the notion of the house rising from the site, while maintaining strong roots in the site.
