Mullholland Residence

Four compositional elements organize the front façade of this 3,800 sf residence –three volumes as rooms, and the fourth as an entry void. Two of the volumes bend outward, and one pulls up to reveal the below void and entrance. All four elements are unified by a larger wall as their backdrop. The home’s rear façade supports overlapping planes intertwined with protruding room elements; As well as a compositional contrast to the front, the back’s is a more direct relation to interior circulation and view, in addition to its plane’s solar-attenuation providing shade from the summer sun.
The interior is open in plan and to the surrounding views. Opposite the entrance, a double-story glass wall pushes into the foyer space dividing living areas. The stair to above bedrooms sits partially outside of the main space, extending into the back, outdoor patio area.
